Increase and strengthen the Institute’s research and related work on lupus. The director must coordinate this effort with other NIH institutes and agencies that deal with lupus. Research should aim to find the causes and a cure. It must include studies on why lupus is more common in women, including African‑American women; basic studies of the disease’s causes; studies of how often it occurs and how it progresses, including differences by sex and race; better diagnostic tests; clinical research on new treatments, including biological agents; and education and information for health professionals and the public.
