The Director of the Institute must run or fund research about the right services for people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their families. Within 6 months after November 14, 1986, the Director must send a research plan to the Chairman of the Council on Alzheimer’s Disease. The plan must study the disease’s spread and risk factors and must develop and test reliable diagnostic and assessment tools. The plan must use and coordinate with other Federal programs, centers, the Administration on Aging, State and local agencies, community groups, and private foundations. Within one year after sending the plan, and every year after that, the Director must send updates as needed and must consult with the Council chairman and Department agency heads when preparing or changing the plan. The Director may also create or fund model methods to help people with these disorders be more independent (including daily living skills) and to prevent or lessen secondary problems like confusion, falls, bladder or bowel incontinence, and bad effects from medicines. The Director may make model training curricula for health workers, aides, and family caregivers. The Council on Alzheimer’s Disease means the council set up in section 11211(a) of this title.
