The Director may fund public or private nonprofit groups to plan, set up, or strengthen regional centers that do clinical research, training, and demonstrations on how to diagnose, prevent, control, and treat rare diseases. Director: the head of the Office of Rare Diseases at NIH. The Director must follow NIH policies and coordinate with other NIH institutes, centers, and the FDA. Federal funds can pay for basic operations (staff and admin), research-related patient care, training and public education, and clinical research projects. Support can last up to 5 years and can be renewed in up to 5-year increments after a scientific peer review recommends it.
