Summary

Gives grants to States or to accredited medical schools in States to run demonstration projects that expand and improve emergency care for children who need trauma or critical care. Grants can run up to 4 years and may get a 5th year if the program performs well. The Secretary checks progress each year. A State may receive no more than three of these grants in any fiscal year, whether the money goes to the State or to a medical school there. One extra one‑year renewal is allowed only if it clearly provides useful data through collection, analysis, and sharing that will help other States that did not get grants. "School of medicine" and "accredited" use the meanings given elsewhere in the law. Authorized funding: $2,000,000 for fiscal year 1985 and the two succeeding fiscal years; $3,000,000 for 1989; $4,000,000 for 1990; $5,000,000 for 1991 and 1992; such sums as may be necessary for 1993–2005; $25,000,000 for 2010; $26,250,000 for 2011; $27,562,500 for 2012; $28,940,625 for 2013; $30,387,656 for 2014; $20,213,000 for each of 2015–2019; $22,334,000 for each of 2020–2024; and $24,334,000 for each of 2025–2029.
