Summary

The Assistant Secretary must give grants to states, area agencies on aging, nonprofit groups, or tribal organizations to help older people who face abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Grantees must use the money to run local projects that prevent and respond to elder abuse (including family violence and sexual assault), reach out to victims in places like nursing homes and senior centers, expand access to shelters and crisis services (including mental health help, safety planning, and legal support), and study legal or training barriers that make it hard to serve older victims. The Assistant Secretary should favor applicants who can carry out these activities and work with programs under subchapter XI. Grantees are encouraged to coordinate with other area agencies on aging, tribal groups, state adult protective services, private nonprofits, and other organizations funded under subchapter XI.
