Summary

The Assistant Secretary, through the Director for American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Native Hawaiian Aging, must create and run a program to protect the rights and safety of older Native Americans. The program will help eligible groups set ongoing priorities about elder rights, give grants for vulnerable elder-protection work, and support team-based elder-justice work like local coordinating councils that identify needs and advise the Assistant Secretary, provide training and technical help, and study review-team models for fatality and serious-injury cases so they can be copied. To get help, an entity must apply to the Assistant Secretary in the form and at the times required. Eligible entities are an Indian tribe or a public agency or nonprofit that serves older Native Americans. Money is authorized as needed for fiscal year 2007 and for subsequent fiscal years.
