§5902 Congressional declaration of policy and purpose; implementation and administration of program by Secretary of Energy

Title 42 › Chapter CHAPTER 74— - NONNUCLEAR ENERGY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT › § 5902

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

Congress requires fast development of technology to give many energy choices. The focus must be on saving energy and using U.S. resources in ways that are socially and environmentally acceptable. Congress wants a strong national research and development program run by the Energy Department. The program must include basic and applied research and demonstrations of practical uses for all helpful energy sources and technologies. For nonnuclear work, the Secretary of Energy must follow this chapter and other laws. Nuclear work remains under the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 and related laws. The Secretary must also include earlier nonnuclear programs from 1974, including the Solar Heating and Cooling Demonstration Act (Public Law 93–409), the Geothermal Energy Research, Development, and Demonstration Act (Public Law 93–410), and the Solar Energy Research, Development, and Demonstration Act (Public Law 93–473).
