Title 42 › Chapter CHAPTER 84— - DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - ESTABLISHMENT OF DEPARTMENT › § 7142
The Department of Energy museum at Building 20358 on Wyoming Avenue South near the corner of M Street inside Kirtland Air Force Base (East) in Albuquerque, New Mexico is the official atomic museum of the United States. It must be called the "National Atomic Museum" and has the exclusive right to use that name in the United States and its territories. The Secretary of Energy may recruit and train unpaid volunteers, and pay small expenses like awards, uniforms, or travel. Volunteers who are not federal employees are generally not covered by federal employment rules, but they are treated as federal employees for tort claims (chapter 171 of title 28) and for work‑injury compensation (subchapter I of chapter 81 of title 5). The Secretary may accept donations designated in writing for the museum (under section 7262), run a gift shop, and display or publish museum items worldwide for reasonable fees. Money left after paying costs from the shop and publishing can be used by the museum. The Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation museum in Las Vegas is the official atomic testing museum and must be called the "National Atomic Testing Museum."
