Title 42 › Chapter CHAPTER 86— - EARTHQUAKE HAZARDS REDUCTION › § 7705e
Creates a post‑earthquake investigations program inside the U.S. Geological Survey to study major quakes and find ways to reduce deaths and property damage. USGS must quickly run studies with each Program agency and may hire grantees or contractors. Agencies must share the findings widely. The Director can use experts from the Agency, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), other federal agencies, or private contractors and reimburse them. Required studies include: NSF and USGS analysis of the quake causes and ground shaking; NSF and NIST study of how buildings and lifelines behaved (damaged and undamaged); and each Program agency review of how well its earthquake‑risk reduction programs worked and how to improve them.
