§2806 Geospatial data standards

Title 43 › Chapter CHAPTER 46— - GEOSPATIAL DATA › § 2806

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

A federal committee must set standards for each National Geospatial Data Asset theme. The standards must cover rules and guidelines for the data itself, how it is collected and stored, related technology and organization, and the metadata that describes the data. They must follow international protocols when possible, include universal standards that work for declassified intelligence data, and be reviewed and updated regularly. The committee must create and publish these standards following Office of Management and Budget Circular A–119 (or any successor) and only after talking with many data users and providers. It should use existing national and international standards from voluntary standards groups whenever it can, and only make new standards if none exist. The Secretary of the Interior must keep from public release any information that could harm the national interest, security, or defense, including geospatial intelligence activities, after consulting the Director of National Intelligence.
