Summary

Defines key words used in the chapter about 3D elevation data and landslide hazards. 3D — three-dimensional. 3D elevation data — high-resolution 3D elevation information gathered over the United States and its territories using LiDAR, IfSAR, or similar methods; it covers both land and underwater (bathymetric) elevations. 3D Elevation Program — the program set up under this chapter to collect 3D elevation data. IfSAR — interferometric synthetic aperture radar. Indian tribe — has the meaning given in other federal law. Lahar — a large, often fast-moving flow of volcanic debris that threatens areas downstream of volcanoes. LiDAR — light detection and ranging. Secretary — the Secretary of the Interior acting through the Director of the U.S. Geological Survey. State — a State and the District of Columbia. State office — any state unit that maps, studies, or responds to landslide hazards, such as a geological survey, emergency response department, or department of transportation. Territory — Puerto Rico; Guam; American Samoa; the Northern Mariana Islands; the Federated States of Micronesia; the Republic of the Marshall Islands; the Republic of Palau; and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
