Title 43 › Chapter CHAPTER 9— - DESERT-LAND ENTRIES › § 329
Within four years after filing, the applicant must show to an officer chosen by the Secretary of the Interior that they reclaimed and farmed the land as required, are a U.S. citizen, and pay $1 per acre. After that, a land patent (title) is issued to the applicant or their assigns. No one may hold more than 320 acres before the patent issues, except entries begun before March 3, 1891. More proof may be required. Certain related claims can be contested; if shown illegal, abandoned, or not compliant, the claim is canceled and the land and money go to the United States.
