Title 43 › Chapter CHAPTER 2— - UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY › § 36b
The Secretary of the Interior can get land for the U.S. Geological Survey to measure streams and groundwater. Land may be donated, bought, or taken by condemnation when Congress provides money, and no site can be larger than ten acres for any one stream gaging station or observation well. The Secretary can also acquire easements, licenses, rights-of-way, or leases for whatever time is needed. The Secretary must follow state or territorial water laws and must not change or affect any state, federal, or private water rights in interstate streams or their waters.
