When a quarter section of land is split, the dividing line must run north–south. If a half‑quarter is split, the line must run east–west. The exact corner points and sizes are set the same way the prior rules require. Fractional sections with 160 acres or more should, as nearly as possible, be cut into half‑quarter parts, and fractional sections with more or less than 160 acres should, as nearly as possible, be cut into quarter‑quarter parts, under rules the Secretary of the Interior makes.
