Title 44 › Chapter CHAPTER 21— - NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS ADMINISTRATION › § 2116
Copies made by photo, microfilm, digital, or similar methods that follow standards the Archivist sets count the same as keeping the original records forever. Copies made under rules for chapters 21, 29, 31, and 33 of this title also have the same legal effect as the originals. The National Archives has an official seal that courts will accept. When the Archivist seals and certifies a copy, it can be used in court like the original. The Archivist may charge fees to recover the cost of making or certifying copies, and those fees go into the National Archives Trust Fund. The Archivist should not charge federal agencies for official uses unless available appropriations do not cover the cost.
