Title 44 › Chapter CHAPTER 29— - RECORDS MANAGEMENT BY THE ARCHIVIST OF THE UNITED STATES AND BY THE ADMINISTRATOR OF GENERAL SERVICES › § 2905
The Archivist must set rules for keeping records that have lasting value and help federal agencies follow those rules. If the Archivist learns records in an agency are being or may be illegally removed, damaged, changed, or destroyed, the Archivist must tell the agency head and help start legal steps with the Attorney General to recover the records. If the agency does not act in a reasonable time, the Archivist must ask the Attorney General to take action and must tell Congress about that request. The Archivist must also help the head of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs study and create rules about record‑keeping requirements that federal agencies impose on the public and on state and local governments.
