Title 45 › Chapter CHAPTER 21— - ALASKA RAILROAD TRANSFER › § 1201
Congress says the federal government should offer to transfer the Alaska Railroad to the State of Alaska. The railroad was built by the federal government for Alaska and now mainly helps Alaska residents and businesses. Many towns and people in Alaska rely on it for freight and passenger service, so keeping and possibly expanding the railroad is an important government function. Moving the railroad to the State fits a long-standing federal goal of passing suitable programs to states. The transfer would let Alaska decide the railroad’s future role, allow possible extension of service, and save the federal government money. The transfer would be done the same way other transportation functions, like highways and airports, have been passed to the State since 1959.
