If a shipper loads a small valuable item as freight or baggage without giving a written notice of what it really is and how much it is worth, and without having that information put on the shipping receipt (bill of lading), the ship owner and captain are only responsible up to the value shown on that receipt. This rule covers small, high‑value things like precious metals and plated items, jewels and jewelry, watches and clocks, coins, securities and important papers, glass and china, silks and furs, stamps and maps, and similar articles.
