American Great Lakes vessels must not be used for certain kinds of trade or services. They cannot carry cargo that starts from a U.S. port off the Great Lakes, or move goods between U.S. ports. They cannot haul bulk cargo covered by sections 55305 or 55314 of this title or section 2631 of title 10. They also may not act as a contract carrier or as a scheduled common carrier with frequent regular sailings in foreign trade. One exception: a Great Lakes vessel may be used for up to 90 days in any 12‑month period for trade from a U.S. port not on the Great Lakes, but not during the Great Lakes shipping season.
