The Secretary of the Interior must name someone from inside the Department within 120 days after Nov. 2, 1995, to carry out the United States’ duties under this title and the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act. If the Secretary does not pick anyone by that date, or if the job is later empty, the Assistant Secretary for Policy, Budget, and Administration will take over those duties. That person must promote the beneficiaries’ interests and help the beneficiaries and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands get help from Interior and other federal agencies to support homesteading, economic self-sufficiency, and social well‑being.
