Title 49 › Subtitle SUBTITLE V— - RAIL PROGRAMS › Part PART C— - PASSENGER TRANSPORTATION › Chapter CHAPTER 241— - GENERAL › § 24102
Names and explains the key rail-related words used in this part. Auto-ferry transportation is intercity train service that carries cars or recreational vehicles with their riders, and, if space is available, used unoccupied vehicles. Commuter authority is a state, local, or regional group set up to provide or contract for commuter rail. Commuter rail passenger transportation is short-haul rail in metro and suburban areas, usually with reduced fares, multi-ride tickets, and morning and evening peak service. Intercity rail passenger transportation is any passenger rail that is not commuter rail. Long-distance route is a route of more than 750 miles between endpoints that Amtrak operated when the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008 was enacted. National Network includes long-distance and State-supported routes. National rail passenger transportation system includes the continuous Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington, DC; corridors the Secretary names high-speed after regular intercity service starts; Amtrak long-distance routes over 750 miles as of the 2008 Act; and shorter corridors (750 miles or less) run by Amtrak or another carrier receiving funds under chapter 229. Northeast Corridor covers Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. Rail carrier is a person or a state or local government unit that provides rail transport for pay. Rate is the price charged for rail transportation. Regional transportation authority is an entity set up to provide passenger transport in a region. State-of-good-repair means physical assets perform at their design level when keeping them has lower life cycle cost than replacing them, and that level is kept by regular maintenance and replacement. State-supported route is a route Amtrak operates as described earlier or in section 24702, excluding trains on the Northeast Corridor.
