Title 49 › Subtitle SUBTITLE VII— - AVIATION PROGRAMS › Part PART A— - AIR COMMERCE AND SAFETY › Subpart subpart ii— - economic regulation › Chapter CHAPTER 417— - OPERATIONS OF CARRIERS › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - SMALL COMMUNITY AIR SERVICE › § 41732
Sets the minimum rules for basic air service to keep eligible places connected. It covers trips to a medium or large hub less than 650 miles away (unless in a noncontiguous State) and trips to a small hub or nonhub when in Alaska or when the nearest medium/large hub is more than 400 miles away. Outside Alaska the service must be 2 round trips per day, 6 days a week, with at most one stop. In Alaska the minimum is the 1976 level or 2 round trips per week, whichever is greater, unless the Secretary and Alaska agree to a different level after consulting the community. Flights should be at reasonable times and prices and normally use two‑engine planes with two pilots, unless no such service ran for at least 60 consecutive operating days since October 31, 1978. The Secretary may grant time‑limited waivers on request, including for related rules in section 41734.
