If a person knows information is false and gives it in a way people could reasonably believe, claiming an attempt to do something covered by sections 46502(a), 46504, 46505, or 46506, they can be fined up to $10,000 for each false report. The Secretary of Homeland Security, and for cases tied to 46504 the Secretary of Transportation, may reduce the fine. The government can also take the fine out of money it owes that person.
