People who knowingly break certain safety rules, or who willfully or recklessly break rules, orders, permits, or approvals under this chapter, can be punished. They can be fined under Title 18, jailed for up to 5 years, or both. If the violation causes a hazardous material release that leads to death or bodily injury, jail time can be up to 10 years. Knowingly means you actually knew the facts or a reasonable person in the same situation would have known. You do not have to know the law or rule exists. Willfully means you knew the facts and knew the act was illegal. Recklessly means you ignored or did not care about the likely harmful results of your actions.
