Defines key words and says that, unless the chapter says otherwise, the definitions in sections 10102 and 13102 of this title apply. Beneficial owner: a person with ownership rights but not legal title (includes trustees); carriers and similar service providers are not beneficial owners just for doing or arranging intermodal transport. Carrier: motor, water, rail, or ocean common carrier. Container: freight container per ISO668–1979(E). First carrier: the first carrier to move a loaded container or trailer in intermodal transport. Gross cargo weight: cargo plus packaging, ice, pallets, and dunnage. Intermodal transportation: moving a loaded container or trailer from origin to destination by more than one mode in interstate or foreign commerce, whether under one or more bills of lading. Trailer: a nonpowered cargo unit pulled by a truck tractor.
