The Inspector General can investigate reports from employees about law or rule violations, serious mismanagement, large waste of funds, abuse of power, or dangers to public health and safety. The IG must keep the employee’s name secret unless the employee agrees or the name must be revealed during the investigation. Managers who control hiring, firing, promotions, or discipline must not punish or threaten an employee for reporting to the IG. The only exception is if the report was made knowing it was false or with willful disregard for whether it was true.
