Title 5 › Part PART III— - EMPLOYEES › Subpart Subpart D— - Pay and Allowances › Chapter CHAPTER 57— - TRAVEL, TRANSPORTATION, AND SUBSISTENCE › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION EXPENSES; NEW APPOINTEES, STUDENT TRAINEES, AND TRANSFERRED EMPLOYEES › § 5737
An agency can pay or pay for certain travel and moving costs when it sends an employee from their normal work location to another duty station for at least 6 months but not more than 30 months. Under agency rules, these payments can replace the usual moving benefits the employee might otherwise get. Covered costs include travel to and from the assignment, moving the employee’s family and household goods, a per‑day travel allowance for family en route, trips to look for housing, temporary housing costs at the start and end of the assignment, a miscellaneous expense payment, shipping a privately owned vehicle, a tax allowance on reimbursements, nontemporary storage of household goods (subject to the overall weight limit for transported property), and property management fees. The agency cannot pay for costs the employee incurs after the temporary assignment ends.
