§6329c Weather and safety leave

Title 5 › Part PART III— - EMPLOYEES › Subpart Subpart E— - Attendance and Leave › Chapter CHAPTER 63— - LEAVE › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - OTHER PAID LEAVE › § 6329c

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

Agencies may give paid leave to one employee or a group when they cannot safely get to or do their jobs because of an act of God, a terrorist attack, or another dangerous condition. That leave must not reduce the employee’s pay, other leave they already have, or their credit for time or service. Agencies must record this leave separately from other types of leave. Even employees covered by a veterans’ leave rule that might otherwise exclude them are covered here. Agency means executive branch agencies and the Department of Veterans Affairs, but not the Government Accountability Office. Employee uses the normal federal definition, but does not include intermittent workers who have no regular tour of duty. The Office of Personnel Management must issue rules on how to use and record this leave within 270 days.
