If a federal employee leaves the job or moves to a job not covered by this law after at least 5 years of civilian service, they can get a pension that starts at age 62. A Member who leaves after December 31, 1955 and has 5 years of civilian service can also get a pension at 62. A Member with 10 or more years of Member service can get a pension at 60. A Member with 20 or more years of total service, including at least 10 years as a Member, can take a reduced pension starting at 50. A judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces who leaves after 5 years of civilian service can get a pension at 62. A judge who leaves after finishing the term they were appointed for is eligible for a pension. If a judge chooses a pension before age 60, it will be reduced. The pension amount is figured under section 8339.
