Title 50 › Chapter CHAPTER 37— - NATIONAL SECURITY SCHOLARSHIPS, FELLOWSHIPS, AND GRANTS › § 1913
The Secretary of Defense can set up and run a National Language Service Corps. The Corps is a group of private people with foreign language skills who agree to help the Department of Defense or other federal agencies. If set up, the National Security Education Board must help oversee and coordinate the Corps as the Secretary decides under paragraph (9) of section 1903(d). To join, a person must be a U.S. citizen who can legally work in the U.S., be at least 18 years old, and have the language skills the Secretary wants. The Secretary can give members training. When it serves the national interest, the Secretary can call members to provide language help, but must get the head of another agency’s agreement first if the member already works for that agency. The Secretary may charge fees up to full cost for services. Fees go back into the Department’s account and stay available until spent.
