The President picks a Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation, and the Senate must approve that choice. Under the Administrator’s control, the Deputy carries out duties the Administrator assigns, mainly to stop the spread of weapons-of-mass-destruction materials, technology, and expertise; detect proliferation worldwide; eliminate surplus fissile material usable in nuclear weapons; and help ensure international nuclear safety.
