Defines key words used in this chapter. "Between the ages of eighteen and twenty-six" means a man who has turned 18 but not yet turned 26; other age ranges are read the same way. "United States" in a geographic sense means the several States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam. "Armed forces" includes the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. "District court of the United States" also covers courts for U.S. Territories and possessions. "Local board" can include an intercounty local board when that applies. "Director" means the Director of the Selective Service System. A "duly ordained minister of religion" is someone formally ordained by a church who regularly preaches, teaches, and leads worship; a "regular minister of religion" is someone who regularly does those duties and is recognized by their church but may not be formally ordained; the phrase does not cover people who only preach or teach occasionally or who were ordained but do not perform ministerial duties regularly. "Organized unit" for a reserve means a unit whose members must attend scheduled drills and training. "Reserve components of the armed forces" includes the federally recognized National Guard and Air National Guard, the Officers’ Reserve Corps, Regular Army Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Enlisted Reserve Corps, Navy Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, and the Public Health Service Reserve when it serves with the armed forces.
