Defines basic words used in this chapter. Servicemember — a member of the uniformed services (see 10 U.S.C. 101(a)(5)). Military service — for Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, and Coast Guard it means active duty (see 10 U.S.C. 101(d)(1)); for the National Guard it also includes federally funded active service over 30 consecutive days under 32 U.S.C. 502(f) during a President-declared national emergency; for commissioned officers of the Public Health Service and NOAA it means active service; it also covers time away from duty for sickness, wounds, leave, or other lawful reasons. Period of military service — from the date a servicemember enters service until they are released or die in service. Dependent — a spouse; a child (see 38 U.S.C. 101(4)); or someone the servicemember supported more than half for the 180 days before applying for relief. Court — any U.S. or State court or administrative agency, including local ones. State — includes commonwealths, territories, possessions, and the District of Columbia. Secretary concerned — for armed forces see 10 U.S.C. 101(a)(9); for Public Health Service officers it is the Secretary of Health and Human Services; for NOAA officers it is the Secretary of Commerce. Motor vehicle — as defined in 49 U.S.C. 30102(a)(6). Judgment — any judgment, decree, order, or ruling, final or temporary.
