Title 54 › Subtitle Subtitle I— - National Park System › Chapter CHAPTER 1013— - EMPLOYEES › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER I— - GENERAL PROVISIONS › § 101304
The Secretary may buy personal gear and supplies for Service employees and take the cost out of salary funds or other amounts due them. The Secretary can pay back employees or other owners if horses, vehicles, or equipment are lost, damaged, or destroyed while in the care of an employee or the Department and being used for firefighting, trail work, or other official business. Payments come from the appropriation that would pay to hire that equipment. The Secretary can require field employees to supply horses, motor vehicles, and other needed gear. The Government will pay for feed, care, and housing for animals and for storage or fuel for vehicles and equipment the employees must provide. Under rules the Secretary creates, the Secretary may also hire, rent, or buy property from employees when it serves the public interest.
