The Secretary can pay travel and moving costs under rules the Secretary makes. This can cover employees who are moving to a new permanent work location and family members of employees who die. If a deceased employee lived in Federal housing and the family must leave right away, the government can pay to move them to the nearest available housing of equal or better quality and can pay up to 60 days’ rent. If the employee’s last permanent station was outside the conterminous 48 States, the government can pay to move the family to the nearest port of entry in the conterminous 48 States.
