Summary

The Secretary must run a program that gives direct grants to preserve places listed on the National Register. Each year, money for the program cannot be more than 10 percent of what is appropriated to the Historic Preservation Fund. Grants, made after talking with the State Historic Preservation Officer, can pay to save threatened National Historic Landmarks and World Heritage historic property, fund demonstration projects about preservation methods, train skilled preservation workers and curators, and help people or small businesses stay in National Register historic districts. Grants to save threatened landmarks or to help people/small businesses stay in a district can only be used if an insured loan under section 303901 would not do the job as well.
