The Secretary must create a grant program to help States, Tribes, local governments, and nonprofit groups restore battlefield sites from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. Grants cover land already protected under the battlefield acquisition program or battlefield land owned by those groups and listed in the Battlefield Reports. Federal money can pay up to 50% of a project's cost, and work must follow the Secretary of the Interior’s preservation standards (36 C.F.R. part 68 or later). Congress authorized $1,000,000 per year for fiscal 2020–2028.
