Title 54 › Subtitle Subtitle III— - National Preservation Programs › Chapter CHAPTER 3121— - NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION IN THE UNITED STATES › § 312104

Last updated Apr 6, 2026|Official source

Summary

A board of trustees runs the National Trust. The Attorney General, the Secretary, and the Director of the National Gallery of Art are members automatically. The board must include at least 6 general trustees who are U.S. citizens. The board decides how many general trustees there will be and the Trust’s members elect them at a regular meeting. The board sets each trustee’s term but no term can be longer than 5 years. If a trustee leaves early, a replacement serves only the rest of that term. The Attorney General and the Secretary may, by written notice to the Trust, name an officer from their department to act for them on the board. The board elects its chair by a majority vote. Trustees do not get a salary, but they must be paid back for travel and actual expenses needed for meetings and official Trust duties.
