Title 6 › Chapter CHAPTER 1— - HOMELAND SECURITY ORGANIZATION › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER VII— - MANAGEMENT › § 343
The Chief Information Officer must report to the Secretary or to another Department official the Secretary chooses. The CIO must create an Office of Geospatial Management. A Geospatial Information Officer, picked by the Secretary, will run that office and work under the CIO to help meet the Department’s geospatial needs. Geospatial information means maps, surveys, images, and other data that show places or features on Earth. Geospatial technology means tools like satellite systems, GPS, GIS, mapping gear, geocoding, and remote sensing. The CIO must run a program to use this data well, support critical infrastructure and emergency work, make systems work together and avoid duplication, follow standards set by the Director of OMB under section 216 of the E‑Government Act of 2002 (44 U.S.C. 3501 note), work with the Federal Geographic Data Committee and follow OMB Circular A‑16 and Executive Order 12906, and advise on grants and data-sharing with State, local, and tribal governments. Congress may provide funding each year as needed.
