The Under Secretary for Management must run and oversee the Department’s health and medical work for its employees and animals, and can give that work to others if needed. Working with the Chief Medical Officer, the Under Secretary must coordinate medical and veterinary services, create health and occupational exposure policies and guidance, may assign medical liaisons to components on a reimbursable basis, act as the main contact on agreements about Public Health Service Commissioned Corps officers (while components keep control of funding, duties, and supervision), and carry out other related duties the Secretary requires.
