Summary

The Administrator must work with federal agency leaders and the National Advisory Council to help create, issue, and update national voluntary consensus standards for equipment used by Federal, State, local, and tribal governments and nongovernmental emergency responders. The standards must support the national preparedness goal and protect responders’ health and safety. As much as possible, they should match existing standards, consider new threats, and make equipment work together, be interchangeable, durable, flexible, efficient, portable, sustainable, and safe. The Administrator must also help create and update national voluntary consensus standards for training and make sure the national training program follows them. The Administrator must consult with public and private standards organizations while doing this.
