Defines important words used for livestock sales and reporting. Base price: the amount paid for animals when they arrive at the packing plant, before any extras or discounts, stated in dollars per hundred pounds of carcass weight. Basis level: the agreed adjustment to a future price to set the final price. Current slaughter week: the Monday through Sunday week that contains a reporting day. F.O.B.: free on board at the seller’s direct shipping point, no matter how it’s transported. Livestock: cattle, swine, and lambs. Lot: a group of one or more animals sold in a single deal. Marketing: selling or otherwise moving animals, their products, or meat in commerce. Negotiated purchase/sale: a cash or spot deal where buyer and seller agree the base price on a day and delivery to the packer is scheduled within 14 days. Prior slaughter week: the Monday through Sunday before a reporting day. Producer: anyone who sells animals to a packer for slaughter (this includes a packer selling to another packer). Reporting day: a day when a packer handles committed, bought, sold, or slaughtered animals, the Secretary must release that information to the public, and the Department of Agriculture is open. Secretary: the Secretary of Agriculture. State: each of the 50 States.
