Slaughter and related handling must be humane. Either livestock such as cattle, calves, horses, mules, sheep, and swine are made unconscious by a single blow, gunshot, electrical, chemical, or other rapid and effective means before being shackled, hoisted, thrown, cast, or cut; or slaughter done under Jewish or similar religious rites that severs both carotid arteries at once, causing immediate loss of consciousness by brain blood loss, and the handling tied to that ritual, is humane.
