Summary

The Authority can approve grants to States, Indian tribes, local governments, and public or nonprofit groups for approved projects that help local economies. Grants may pay for job training and work-related education, business development with a focus on entrepreneurship, and for building transportation, renewable energy transmission, and telecom infrastructure to spur economic growth. Infrastructure grants may only go to States, Indian tribes, local governments, and nonprofit organizations. Grants can also help very distressed areas improve basic public services or equip industrial parks, and can be used for other program goals. Money for these grants can come from funds set aside for the program, from other Federal grant programs, or from any other source. Federal funds under this law must focus on basic public infrastructure in distressed counties and isolated areas, transportation and telecom that support economic development, business development (especially entrepreneurship), and job training or work-related education that uses existing public schools in the region.
