Defines common words used in the chapter about eggs and egg programs. Secretary — the Secretary of Agriculture or a USDA officer or employee who can act for the Secretary. Person — any individual, group, partnership, corporation, association, cooperative, or other entity. Commercial eggs or eggs — eggs from domesticated chickens sold for people to eat, either in shell form or to be processed into egg products. Hen or laying hen — a female chicken twenty weeks of age or over raised mainly to lay commercial eggs. Egg producer — the person who owns laying hens that produce commercial eggs. Case — a standard shipping package holding thirty dozen eggs. Hatching eggs — eggs meant for hatcheries to produce baby chicks. United States — the forty-eight contiguous States and the District of Columbia. Promotion — actions, including paid ads, to boost the image or appeal of eggs, egg products, spent fowl, or products from spent fowl. Research — research to improve the image, appeal, marketability, production, or quality of eggs, egg products, spent fowl, or products from spent fowl. Consumer education — actions to improve the image or appeal of eggs, egg products, spent fowl, or products from spent fowl. Marketing — the sale or other disposition of commercial eggs, egg products, spent fowl, or products of spent fowl. Commerce — interstate, foreign, or intrastate commerce. Egg products — products made in whole or in part from eggs. Spent fowl — hens removed from commercial egg production and sent for slaughter.
