Defines key words used in this chapter. Beef is the flesh of cattle. Beef products are edible foods made wholly or partly from beef, but not milk or milk products. Board is the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board. Cattle are live domesticated bovines of any age. Committee is the Beef Promotion Operating Committee. Consumer information is nutritional and other facts that help people decide how to buy, cook, and use beef. Department is the Department of Agriculture. Importer is any person who brings cattle, beef, or beef products into the United States from abroad. Industry information is material and programs to build markets, marketing plans, efficiency, and the cattle industry’s image. Order is a beef promotion and research order under the law. Person means an individual or any business or organization. Producer is anyone who owns or acquires cattle, except someone whose only share from a sale is a sales commission, handling fee, or other service fee. Promotion includes actions, including paid advertising, to improve beef’s image and sales. Qualified State beef council is a state-authorized or state-based group that gets voluntary contributions, runs promotion, research, and consumer programs, and is recognized by the Board. Research covers studies on marketing, nutrition, food science, and new product development. Secretary means the Secretary of Agriculture. State means each of the 50 States. United States means the several States and the District of Columbia.
