The Secretary must create the National Agricultural Science Award to support research or advanced study in the food and agricultural sciences, including the social sciences. Two awards are given each fiscal year, one in each of two categories. Each award can give up to $50,000 per year for up to three years to help the recipient do research or study. People working in agricultural research, extension, teaching, or any combination of those roles can be considered. One category honors a scientist for major contributions that advance food and agricultural science. The other is for an early‑career research scientist or a graduate student who has shown strong ability and promise. The Secretary may set up nominating and selection committees of scientists and others to gather nominations and recommend winners.
