The Secretary of Agriculture must buy fruits, vegetables, and nuts to supply domestic nutrition assistance programs, using the program funds available for those purchases. The law requires these yearly amounts: $190,000,000 for fiscal year 2008; $193,000,000 for fiscal year 2009; $199,000,000 for fiscal year 2010; $203,000,000 for fiscal year 2011; and $206,000,000 for fiscal year 2012 and each year after. The foods can be bought frozen, canned, dried, or fresh.
