Summary

The U.S. immigration agency, working with the State Department, must give people who get immigrant or nonimmigrant visas information before or when they enter the United States. The information must explain the severe physical and psychological harm caused by female genital mutilation and warn that doing FGM or allowing a child in your care to have FGM can lead to criminal charges or child-protection actions in the United States. The agency must identify countries where FGM is common and, when practical, give this information mainly to people from those countries. Female genital mutilation is defined as removal or infibulation (closing) of all or part of the clitoris, labia minora, or labia majora.
