Formaldehyde: Unreasonable Health Risk
On January 3, 2025, EPA announced its final TSCA risk evaluation that found formaldehyde presents an unreasonable risk to human health. EPA said the risk is from non-cancer effects in workers and consumers from short-term skin and inhalation exposure and from cancer effects in workers from long-term inhalation exposure.
Upcoming Rules Could Affect Formaldehyde Businesses
Because EPA found an unreasonable risk, it must initiate risk management actions under TSCA section 6(a) and will propose regulatory actions that could affect companies that manufacture, import, process, distribute, use, or dispose of formaldehyde. The docket notes reported production/import volume between 1 billion and 5 billion pounds per year (2016 CDR), and EPA may regulate upstream activities (manufacture, processing, distribution) to address downstream consumer uses.
